Your site's address, and changing it
Every site gets a free address the moment you make it:
yourname.lemonhosted.comIt is included, it has a padlock on it, and it keeps working even if you later point your own domain at the site.
Name and address are two different things
- The name is a label for you — it appears in your portal and nowhere else. Change it as often as you like.
- The address is where visitors go. Changing it changes where your site lives.
Both are on your site's Settings page.
The rules for an address
- 3 to 63 characters.
- Lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens. Hyphens can be in the middle but not at either end.
- It has to be free — the page tells you as you type.
- A few words are reserved (
www,admin,api,shopand a handful more) and cannot be taken by anyone.
Some words — the names of banks, big brands, payment companies — are allowed but held for a person to look at, because they are the shapes people use to build fake sites. If yours is one, the site goes quiet for a short while and you get an email when it clears. It is not an accusation; it is the reason this platform does not become a phishing farm.
Changing an address breaks links, immediately
This is the part worth reading twice.
If people already have your address, think hard. Connecting a domain of your own is almost always the better answer — your visitors get a permanent address you control, and the .lemonhosted.com one carries on working underneath.
How often
Twice per site in any 30 days. That limit exists because an address that moves constantly is what a scam site looks like. If you have a genuine reason to need more, email us.
Picking a good one
- Your business name, with nothing else in it, if you can get it.
- Short beats clever. It gets read aloud over the phone.
- Avoid hyphens where you can — they get lost when people repeat the address.
- Do not put the year, "new", or "v2" in it. You will regret it, and changing it later breaks every link.
