Editing your site

Going back to an earlier version

There are two histories, and they answer different questions. Knowing which one you want takes ten seconds and saves a lot of guessing.

"I want the site the way it looked last Tuesday"

That is published versions. Your site → Versions. Every version you have published is listed with the date, and Restore puts one back live immediately.

Versions are kept for 7 days, plus the one immediately before the current one, which is always kept however old it is. So the undo button for a bad publish never runs out, but "the site as it was last month" does.

"I want the wording I had before I rewrote this page"

That is your editor history, and it lives in the editor's publish panel. Each entry has a label saying where it came from:

LabelWhen it was taken
PublishedEvery time you publish
While you were editingAutomatically, at most once every ten minutes
Before the design changedJust before you switched to a different design
Before you went backJust before you restored an older version

Press Go back to this and that version becomes what you are editing.

Two things worth knowing:

Roughly the last 40 versions of a site are kept, of which up to 20 are the automatic ones, and the three newest are never removed to make room.

Inside the tab you are working in

⌘Z / Ctrl+Z. The editor's History button lists every step since you opened the tab. That list is not saved anywhere — it clears when the tab closes, and it says so at the top. It is for the last five minutes, not the last five days.
